The Gulf Coast Women’s Center for Nonviolence began as a safe house in 1977 bringing services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Since its inception, the Center has grown to be the oldest and largest domestic violence shelter within the state of Mississippi and offers the most comprehensive program to all members of families who have been affected by domestic violence. To date more than 18,000 women and children have been provided emergency shelter and supportive crisis intervention and thousands more have been provided supportive services as non-residential clients. Approximately 19,000 children, adolescents, and adults receive prevention education annually through our presentations in the communities. Our 24-hour crisis line receives 15,000 to 20,000 calls annually regarding emergency shelter, information, referrals, crisis counseling and case management.
The mission statement for the Gulf Coast Women’s Center for Nonviolence is to support and serve victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, and family members of homicide victims, educate the community, and act to reduce incidences of violence. In order to meet the mission statement for the Center as effectively as possible, the Gulf Coast Women’s Center for Nonviolence has designed a comprehensive and interrelated array of services to both sheltered and non-sheltered families. Our services include crisis response, supportive counseling, early intervention, prevention and advocacy. Direct services provided by the Center are listed in detail below:
